SAME RIVER RETURNS TO THE SOURCE

Melding live music, modern dance, physical theater, video and visual art, the NYC-based collective Strike Anywhere teams up with NACL Theatre and its local community to present SAME RIVER. Using first person accounts as source material, SAME RIVER is a multi-media improvisation on how the natural gas extraction process known as fracking affects peoples lives. Over the course of three years, SA has conducted dozens of interviews with Pennsylvania residents whose lives have been directly impacted by fracking and New Yorkers whose fate remains in limbo. Strike Anywhere weaves the collected stories into the existing show to create a high-quality, improvised performance with social and political significance. The piece seeks to draw connections, to give voice to multiple viewpoints and to acknowledge that we are all downstream, that the earths water supply is all the same river. A town-hall style discussion will follow each performance.
The SAME RIVER project was initially launched by a 10 day residency and performance at NACL Theatre in 2010. Strike Anywhere returns 3 years later to perform a new round of interviews and to reflect the current state of the community in the improvised show. Community members will be invited to create a large-scale art installation and be part of a soundpainted community chorus as part of the new version of the show.

Performance/Presentation on SAME RIVER at NET Microfest

Guitarist Rolf Sturm and Artistic Director Leese Walker will share excerpts (live and video) from their interview-based multi-media show SAME RIVER at this year's NETfest. The couple will invite participants into the creative process of the show, sharing how the piece is custom designed to reflect each host community. The performance/presentation will highlight a show that has evolved dramatically over the life of its 3 year tour. Each incarnation of the show has been drastically different sometimes involving community members in the show itself, sometimes building a large visual art installation as part of the show, and always incorporating the words and stories of the local people into the improvised show.

-Sabrina Artel, WJFF Radio
"As NY considers drilling as many as 100,000 wells in the watershed for over 16 million people, Same River brings the human stories of those who are in the pathway of this industry to the fore."
-David LHeureux, Senior Editor, Rodale.com
"Something really cool about this performance was that it intentionally merged theatrical performance and visual art. Before one entered the performance, there was an art installation created by participants in Strike Anywhere's residency at Brooklyn High School for the Arts, as well as art developed in a community art-making day. SAME RIVER is a great example of how interviews can be the basis for a piece that still incorporates many levels of more abstract artistry."

SOUNDPAINTING WORKSHOP

Strike Anywhere's Artistic Director, Leese Walker will teach a workshop in Soundpainting. SOUNDPAINTING is the live composing sign language for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. The language was created by New York composer Walter Thompson and the Walter Thompson Orchestra. Walker has worked with the WTO since 1997 and was the first actor invited into the W.T.O. to adapt the language for actors. At present the language comprises over 1000 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Soundpainting is a sculpting tool. It allows a conductor to shape group improvisations in ways that were never previously possible. The language is great to introduce young students to the art of improvisation in a fun, safe way. It is equally useful with a group of professional skilled performers. Open to actors, dancers, poets, musicians, educators and others who are curious. Bring an instrument if you play and clothes to move in. Workshop will happen 7-9PM. Jam at 9PM for anyone familiar with the language.

Inter-disciplinary Performance: A workshop for dancers, actors and musicians

In this workshop, Strike Anywhere will share an array of exercises which foster clear communication and trust across artistic disciplines. Participants will craft short performance pieces based on interview material gathered for Strike Anywhere's current show, SAME RIVER, an interview-based show about fracking and its effects on communities. Musicians should bring their instrument and everyone should wear comfortable clothing to move in.
PLEASE NOTE: Strike Anywhere will be casting for its February production of SAME RIVER from the master class. The show is a professional touring production that incorporates new interview material from each local community that it visits. For the Bucknell production, a small student ensemble will be assembled to join SA's professional cast. Students may take the master class who do not wish to participate in the production. Those who wish to be considered for the production will be asked to meet one-on-one for an interview on Tuesday 11/13/12 and to meet with the full student team on Wednesday night 11/14/12.

The one-day symposium seeks to celebrate the connection between art and activism while also critically exploring what it means to create politically engaged art today. The symposium will provide a forum for artists and activists to present accounts of their experience of the ways in which activism and protest shape their art, and of how art is used to transform communities. We would like to explore the many ways that artists, using diverse artistic methods and materials, work for social transformation within our communities, and the ways that activists draw on the arts in their struggles for social justice.
THE DAISEY CHAIN - Ensemble Theater Post-Daisey

How will monologist Mike Daisey's missteps affect ensembles going forward? Are the bridges that he built, burnt for good or is the publicity forcing Apple to clean up its labor practices? For ensembles who strive to enact social change, what is the contract that we build with our audiences? Should artists be bound to the same journalistic standards as reporters? What is "truth" in the context of theater? Join us at this month's Ensemble Roundtable as we delve into dilemmas raised by the Daisey firestorm.

SAME RIVER @ Irondale in Brooklyn

SAME RIVER is a multi-media, interview-based, improvised production. As hydro-fracking is poised to affect NYCs water supply, Same River brings the upstate war over this controversial method of drilling downstream.
Including live music, modern dance, physical theater, and video, this improvised show will be different every night. Following each show, there will be a tightly facilitated town hall discussion on the issues the piece presents. Experts from United For Action will be on hand to propel the conversation.
Audience members will experience a visual art installation upon entry to the theater. The artwork is the result of a seven-week residency at nearby Brooklyn High School for the Arts with the science, theater and technical theater classes. Art work will also be developed during a community art-making day for families on February 11 at 2:00 PM at Irondale Center (ages 6 and up).

| This month we will explore techniques to challenge entrenched power.
The Living Theatre is dedicated to transforming the organization of power within society from a competitive, hierarchical structure to cooperative and communal expression. The troupe attempts to do so by counteracting complacency in the audience through direct spectacle. The Living Theatre will draw on ideas from its primary workshop, "A Day in the Life of the City" which they have been doing for over 65 years around the world, as the oldest experimental theatre ensemble still working under its founder Judith Malina.
Theater of the Oppressed is a tool for building groups and communities, challenging power and practicing self- and social transformation. Marie-Claire Picher will lead the workshop. Picher is a co-founder (1990) of the Theater of the Oppressed Laboratory (TOPLAB) and has worked and collaborated closely with Augusto Boal until his death in 2009. One of the most experienced Theater of the Oppressed (TO) practitioners in North America, she has presented thousands of hours of TO facilitation training in New York and throughout the United States, as well as in Chiapas, Tabasco, Mexico City, Guatemala and Cuba.

ENSEMBLE TECHNIQUE SWAP: TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES

This month we will explore techniques used to transcend boundaries. Bond Street Theatre will conduct a series of exercises based on their recent work with young actors and actresses in Herat, Afghanistan. Their session will illuminate the challenge of teaching techniques across language barriers, and surmounting gender issues across cultural barriers. Strike Anywhere will lead a workshop on Soundpainting. This sign language for structured improvisation is a wonderful way to bridge both disciplinary boundaries (actors, dancers, visual artists, poets & musicians) as well as forge a coherent composition between amateur and professional performers or audiences and a performance ensemble. Soundpainting is the live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present the language comprises over 750 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Direction of the composition is gained through the parameters of each set of signed gestures.

Strike Anywhere's partner school, Manhattan International High School (M.I.H.S.), serves newly arrived immigrant students. Each year, SA collaborates with English teacher Celeste Micelotta to serve three 9th grade classes through a full-year residency that integrates theater into the English classroom. M.I.H.S. believes SA's hands-on, ensemble approach is an effective way of bolstering language skills for first-year students and orients them to the collaborative, performance-based philosophy of the school. Artistic Director/Teaching Artist Leese Walker has taught at M.I.H.S. as a visiting teaching artist since 2000 working with five teachers over the years. In 2006, Strike Anywhere officially created a partnership with the school to provide incoming freshman with experiential learning techniques during a full year residency in their English classroom.

Regional Congress of Anti-Fracking Groups

The Brecht Forum will be hosting a conversation with many different anti-fracking groups in order to share where everyone is at, identify and further advance common goals and strategies, consolidate the already extant networks under a more comprehensive umbrella, and plan a Press Kit that everyone will be able to use in their respective (and, hopefully, more closely coordinated) campaigns. This will be a great opportunity to plug any upcoming actions and events your group has planned, and to recruit help for organizing and outreach. This is all about creating a nexus of communication, a vehicle for resource sharing, organizing joint actions and generating collective responses to challenges we all face.

This meeting is to discuss the formation of a structured network of anti-fracking organizations in the region. A network can provide a means of "aggregating member power and achieving the scale and scope needed" to stop the further spread of this dangerous and destructive extraction method without disrupting the initiative and autonomy of individual member organizations.
Step into SAME RIVER at this month's FIRST FRIDAY

This month the group will improvise off of interviews collected for the new evening-length touring work, SAME RIVER. The interview-based piece is based on stories about water, water issues and the natural gas extraction process known as "fracking" which is tearing communities apart upstate and threatening NYC's drinking water. The performance is part of a weekend of related events at the Brecht Forum. The SA Ensemble will be joined by students from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School where SA completed a 6 week residency on fracking, water and created a version of SAME RIVER with over 130 students.

SAME RIVER at JKO High School

SAME RIVER is an-interview based show which examines the controversial natural gas extraction process known as hydraulic-fracturing (commonly known as "fracking") and its effects on the community and the environment. Students from the school will perform alongside of Strike Anywhere's professional ensemble of jazz musicians, dancers and actors as they improvise a show based on interviews with the public. The project is a collaboration between Roundabout Theater Company, the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble and J.K.O. High School. The show is the culmination of an eight-week school-wide residency by the theaters' teaching-artists in the school. An visual installation in the lobby will highlight what science and art students learned about fracking and the water cycle over the course of the residency.

MACHINAL Mash-up

Strike Anywhere's monthly series provides the ensemble with a forum for experimentation. This month the ensemble is joined by Blessed Unrest, another NYC-based ensemble theater who is currently in the rehearsals for a production of "Machinal". Written in 1928, "Machinal" is a powerful expressionist drama about women's financial dependence on men, and one woman's attempt to break free. Strike Anywhere's improvisers will collide with Blessed Unrest's actors to blast open the scenes they have rehearsed - what happens when you put improvisers in the room with actors who are blocking a play? How can the audience, cast and SA ensemble use Soundpainting to deconstruct the play? SA will improvise off of the themes, lines, rhythms and blocking that Blessed Unrest brings to the performance. It is a mash-up! Come see what happens.

SOUNDPAINTING WORKSHOP at the NET Micro-Fest

Strike Anywhere's Artistic Director, Leese Walker and SA Ensemble Member, Rolf Sturm (Guitar) will teach a workshop in Soundpainting. SOUNDPAINTING is the live composing sign language for musicians, dancers, actors, poets, and visual artists working in the medium of structured improvisation. The language was created by New York composer Walter Thompson and the Walter Thompson Orchestra. Walker has worked with the WTO since 1997 and Sturm since 1987. At present the language comprises over 800 gestures that are signed by the composer/conductor indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. Soundpainting is a sculpting tool. It allows a conductor to shape group improvisations in ways that were never previously possible. Imagine a group of musicians improvising a swing jazz tune together while a group of dancers and actors move in unison together. The conductor signs and the entire group sneezes together and then the musicians join the actors and dancers in the unison movement. The conductor signs again and the whole group breaks out hysterically laughing and then slowly morphs back into the original jazz tune.

Three Soundpaintings

For this month's !!FreEpLaY!! Strike Anywhere will be joined by Soundpainter Evan Mazunik and the Cold Reading Trio. The group will perform three Soundpaintings each conducted by a different Soundpainter. Soundpainting is the system of conducting/composing developed by Walter Thompson and the Walter Thompson Orchestra for performers working in the medium of structured improvisation. At present, this system includes more than 750 gestures signed by the conductor/composer indicating the type of improvisation desired of the performers. A conductor signs to improvisers and the performers respond to the gestures in real time creating a compositional dialogue between conductor and improvisers.

Step into SAME RIVER at this month's FIRST FRIDAY

In July 2010, Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble began work on SAME RIVER. The interview-based project explores the theme of water through the eyes of local residents. The company performed its first 10 day residency in Sullivan County, NY at NACL's Catskill Festival of New Theater. Aware of the conflict that was raging in the region, the company dropped into a firestorm. They found rural towns torn apart by a battle over natural gas drilling and its effects on water. The Delaware River Basin, which provides 16 million people (including NYC) with drinking water, was under siege. The picture was complex. Passions were high. The ensemble met one-on-one with activists, scientists, farmers, and politicians. Experience what SA found...add to the picture. The project is designed as a feedback loop. Audience members respond in real time to what is happening on stage by writing responses which then influence the performance. "It is not some problem far away...we all need water and the Delaware provides NYC with its drinking water. We all need the SAME RIVER."

Ensemble Theater - What's The Point?

Why does it matter that your company chooses to function an an ensemble? Letting our stakeholders and potential supporters in on what it means to be an ensemble is critical. At this month's Roundtable, we will share different strategies and brainstorm ways to let people in on what it means to be an ensemble and why the process is so important.

!! FreEpLaY !! a tribute to Bob Bowen

Honoring SA's bassist Bob Bowen, who was recently killed in a hit-and-run accident, SA's interdisciplinary ensemble of world-class jazz musicians, modern dancers, and actors will spontaneously spin out performance pieces in a style dubbed 3D-Jazz. Colleagues of Bob will sit in. In the tradition of Bob, it will be an open improvisation - the ensemble will create art in the moment, allowing intuition, the sounds of the room and audience suggestion to shape what they play.

NETWorks: The ABCs of Today's Creative Touring Partnerships

The environment for touring has changed considerably in the last few years. Producing theaters are increasingly presenting and the rise of national and international performance festivals is creating greater opportunities to share the work. At the same time the sluggish economy is making many presenters risk-averse, looking for the sure bets.
In this shifting arena, what do ensembles and companies need to know as they prepare to tour or re-think how they tour? Led by touring artists and activist presenters, this artist-centered workshop will map the touring landscape, build skills and share resources to prepare artists and companies to go out on the road.
Whether you're touring to a theater across town or to a performing arts center across the country (or just thinking about touring) you won't want to miss this opportunity.

A Drum! A Drum! Macbeth Doth Come!!!

MACBETH VARIATIONS II is the second stage of an international collaboration between NYC-based Strike Anywhere and Paris-based Anitya. The two companies are innovators in their use of Soundpainting, the sign language for conducted improvisation, and its application to classical text.
MACBETH VARIATIONS II is a set of improvised inter-disciplinary compositions using Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" as the melody from which the improvisers depart. Just as jazz musicians improvise on jazz standards finding infinite variety within classic tunes, each performance of the show will be different. Improvisers rip apart rehearsed scenes and reassemble them in new ways examining the elasticity of ethics, the nature of ambition, and the corruption of the mind. The result is a highly-charged interdisciplinary performance event that is different every night.
Musicians: Bob Bowen (bass), Christophe Cagnolari (sax), Michel Gentile (flute), Rob Henke (trumpet), Rolf Sturm (guitar)

A Schechner Soundpainting!

Come support experimental theater and enjoy a few short soundpaintings by Strike Anywhere. Strike Anywhere's ensemble of musicians, dancers and actors will spontaneously weave a composition using the Soundpainting sign language to guide the improvisation. Experiencing a Soundpainting has been described as "3-D Jazz" or watching a sculptor create an audio/visual collage. The conductor communicates with the players using gestures that indicate how the improvisers should modify their improvisation. It is a kind of poetry in motion.

THE MACBETH VARIATIONS- SA SOUNDPAINTS IN FRANCE!

THE MACBETH VARIATIONS is a set of improvised inter-disciplinary compositions exploring Shakespeare's play "Macbeth". The performance features on-stage conductors who sculpt the improvisation through a complex sign language called Soundpainting. Soundpainting is the live composing sign language created by New York composer Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, and actors. Performers respond to the conductor's gestures by shaping their improvisation as signed. By using Soundpainting to disrupt narrative, to loop, splice and reorder text, the sonorous quality of Shakespeare's language takes front seat. The use of repetition and variation breeds multiple layers of meaning. The result is a highly-charged interdisciplinary performance event that transcends language; a soundscape that floats in the sea of jazz, and is anchored in classical text.

November 6 & 7, 2008: 20:00
As part of the THE MACBETH VARIATIONS development process, the company is scheduled to perform a series of international learning exchanges with jazz legend, Francois Jeanneau and the foremost Soundpainting ensemble in France, Anitya. Over the course of the next year, the companies will trade ideas and new applications of Soundpainting using Strike Anywhere's THE MACBETH VARIATIONS project as their meeting point. This week in Paris represents the first stage of the artistic exchange.

A.R.T./NY and Strike Anywhere Host an Event for Ensemble Practioners!

Ensemble theaters occupy a unique space in the American theater. Encompassing a field as diverse as the country itself, ensembles are often defined by a deep connection to community, collective decision-making power and ownership, long gestation periods to devise new work, egalitarian processes and artists/administrators who work together consistently over years. The needs and concerns of ensembles are often quite different than their more traditional cousins.
Over the last 5 years, the field has enjoyed greater visibility, thanks to the organizing and advocacy efforts of N.E.T. (Network of Ensemble Theaters) and funders like Duke, Ford, NEA, APAP and Flintridge who have lent major support to the ensemble field.

soundpaintingSOPHOCLES

soundpaintingSOPHOCLES is a set of improvised inter-disciplinary compositions for instrumentalists and actors. The composition uses different scenes from Antigone as points of departure. The performance features an on-stage conductor who sculpts the improvisation through a complex sign language called Soundpainting. World-class musicians and actors well-versed in the language of Soundpainting respond to the conductor's gestures by shaping their improvisation as signed. Musicians might jump from an up-tempo swing-feel to a splatter of pointillistic sound, as actors, tangled in a conflict, suddenly reveal their whirring interiors through a set of repetitive actions. The result is a three dimensional aural collage that up-ends expectation and blurs the boundaries between music and theater.

UNDER THE ZIPPER - N.E.T. at APAP!

Strike Anywhere is proud to host UNDER THE ZIPPER a showcase of Ensemble Theater designed to coincide with the 2008 Arts Presenters Conference. Strike Anywhere will share two excerpts of current work: a "Soundpainting" and its dynamic two-woman vaudeville, "10 Brecht Poems". Soundpainting is the live compositional sign language designed by Walter Thompson for musicians, dancers, and actors working in the medium of structured improvisation. This gestural sign language of over 750 signs allows a conductor to communicate with an orchestra of performers and to shape an improvisation while it is in motion. SA is one of only 3 theater companies in the United States licensed to use the Soundpainting language. "10 Brecht Poems" is a collaboration with NACL Theatre. Tannis Kowalchuk (NACL) and Leese Walker (Strike Anywhere) use satire and a variety of performance styles to bring to life 10 poems by Bertolt Brecht, the renowned German playwright and social critic.

Puppet Painting Packs a Punch!

Strike Anywhere lends its brand of Soundpainting to PUNCH, the monthly puppet showcase. Soundpainting is the live composition sign language used to conduct improv. Developed by Walter Thompson, the language is comprised of over 750 signed gestures that shape the composition while it is in motion. Tonight's soundpainting will surely be a wacky one, where all things puppet will be in the mix. Guest musician: Bohdan Hilash (bass clarinet) will join SA members: Michel Gentile (flute), Brian DuGuay, Julie Pasquale and conductor, Leese Walker.

Brecht Broads Beltway Bound!

After last year's successful tour to Chicago and New England, the Brecht Broads head back to D.C. where they began their East Coast tour in 2003 at the Goethe Institut. For this stint, they will be hosted by Open Theatre/DC and will perform at Busboys and Poets, the watering hole for D.C. progressives. (A scarce breed these days...) So belly up to the bar and take in an earful of Brecht. We must progress!

UNFLINCHING POLITICAL PERFORMANCE ART TO START JUNE 2 AT THE BRECHT FORUM IN NYC

Mixing jazz, clowning, dance, and physical theatre, the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble probes the political landscape in its latest offering POCKET FULL OF CHANGE. From the deleterious effects of apathy and consumerism, to media manipulation and the rush to war, the ensemble deftly skewers its subjects with humor and insight. Appropriating concepts from jazz and popular music, Strike Anywheres performers act as different instruments or parts of the band. Imagine actors dialogue as a horn section or dancers movement as a visual baseline. And, as with jazz, the company improvises on the pieces every night making each performance unique. An unflinching set of questions are raised by the ensemble as they riff on topics such as civil liberties and healthcare in todays society. Its art that asks questions. Post-show dialogue will be served up with drinks.
